Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Belarus and Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta were established in 1996.
The Order of Malta is actively involved in charitable activities in Belarus: health improvement of children affected by the Chernobyl disaster, assistance to boarding schools and family-type orphanages, re-equipment of medical institutions, professional training of orphans and children with mental disabilities.
Since 2002, an internship has been organized for Belarusian doctors at university clinics in Belgium.
In 2004, the Order of Malta opened its embassy in Belarus, the first state among the CIS countries.
Cooperation with the most authoritative religious charitable organization in Europe is very important as it strengthens interfaith ties and positions of Belarus in the international arena.
