European turtle dove is a bird with unusual noble past. The ancient Slavs considered the appearance of a pair of turtle doves near their home as a blessing from above and believed in a positive outcome of family problems. People fed the bird and tried to tame it. The first postal messengers from the bird family Columbidae were turtle doves (males), because the females never left their nest alone.
Modern science is aware of the existence of more than 10 species of turtle doves. Some of them are listed in the Red Book and are strictly protected by the legislation of the country in which they live.
Migratory species. They arrive later than other wild pigeons, usually already when the leaves unfold on the trees. Cooing corresponds to the Latin species name - it is a quiet rhythmic "turr, turr, turr".
