Birds of the order Strigiformes are predominantly nocturnal predators, distinguished by a number of characteristics. The sharp long claws of owls are strongly curved. The beak, curving from the very base, ends in a short hook. The eyes of owls are very large and look straight. Vision and hearing are extremely sensitive. Owls can turn their heads 270 degrees. They have soft plumage, thanks to which they fly silently. They usually feed on small rodents. Smaller species feed on large insects. They bring significant benefits to agriculture by destroying mouse-like rodents. There are 13 species of owls out of 229 known in Belarus.
